We want to build a working environment where everyone trusts each other in getting our works done and bring problems on the table when they exist. Our team should not be constantly worry about others backstabbing each other or people constantly micromanaging what they are doing daily. So having basic trust of each other is crucial to our team. Note that trust is typically earned over the course of time. We don’t expect everyone to fully trust each other on day 1. But we want people to always assume good intent when starting working with each other. Our energy should not be spent on worried about the repercussion of telling the team the truth, admit mistakes, or anything that is meant to make the team better.
To enable highly efficient working environment, we promote transparency across our teams. If you have doubts on certain decisions are made, it is okay to bring it up, question it, debate it. At our current team size, we can spend a reasonable amount of time to share the details and reasons behind our decisions so the whole team is onboard with what we are trying to do. Do note that being transparent does not mean there’s no privacy. A quick example is, I will never share people’s salary with others. But that is something others would like to do so themselves with others, you are free to do so. At the current size of our team, we practice open retrospects. If anyone of us make a mistake, we’d prefer to share that with everyone in a team setting so everyone gets to learn from it. The expectation for everyone here is not to take that as a public humiliation as that is usually how people feel. We do such practice so that we as a team can learn and move forward efficiently without repeating mistakes. If in the future our team do expand and you find this practice not ideal in your respective team, you are welcome to adapt to your team dynamic as needed.
With all the trust and transparency, our team still cannot thrive if we consistently failing to deliver. I have listed skills and other factors not as high as trust and transparency, anyone who successfully passed our interviews had reached certain skill bars in the team. So we are expected to execute with what we have and deliver anything our customers ask us to. If we fail to get shit done, our team will not last long and there won’t be any consistent customers in the future. But always remember, you are not on your own. We are a team. So if you face any issues or blockers, ask them in our team chat and we will figure it out together. If there’s a technical blocker we cannot solve, we can always look at alternative routes. But delaying communication and risking our customer project progress will not be taken lightly. So communicate thoroughly and frequently.
